EESC/CESE - European Economic and Social Committee
The European Economic and Social Committee is the European consultative body which represents the various categories of economic and social activities. It offers them a forum for debate and reflection both at European level and in the Member States.
The EESC is made up of 344 members from the 27 Member States, drawn from organisations representing employers, workers, farmers, SMEs, commerce, crafts, cooperatives, mutual benefit societies, the professions, consumers, environmentalists, families, ""social"" NGOs etc.
The library started its development in 1974, focused on the working items of the Committee and on the providing of relevant information and documents to its members and staff.
When creating the COR, the Maastricht Treaty established by its Protocol 16 a common administrative structure for both the EESC and the COR. The library -being part of this common services-, has two different collections in order to provide correct and up-to-date information to members and staff of each Committee.
The general purposes of the EESC Library are: acquisition of periodicals and books, budget and financial control, cataloguing and indexing, bibliographic information, research assistance, database exploitation.
